Gentle Lowland Giants

Getting off this flight are representatives from some of the largest and most renowned Lowland distilleries. Fret not, for they are soft, gentle, and easygoing, perfect as apéritifs. You may address them as the Lowland Ladies as they are feminine and floral in character. Being with them evokes sweet memories of grassy meadows, cream, honey, ginger, and spices.

Single Malt scotch whisky—what is it?

It’s whisky made from a single distillery. Not a single batch nor a single barrel, but a single distillery. For example, a Single Malt from Glenkinchie may use whiskies from different barrels, but all of those whiskies must be produced in Glenkinchie itself. As long the whiskies used are from that one same distillery, we can call the final product a Single Malt whisky.

Description

Hands down one of the best introductions to the Lowland region. This Glenkinchie flagship whisky possesses the easy-going trait of those living a simple life in a verdant green land. It is light and smells of grass. Gathers fruits and cooks them for a living, adding a pour of Sauternes wine for taste. This 12-year-old makes a good starter before a warm meal.

Light, royal-like aroma surfaces with a fusion of salty almonds and hazelnuts. There are sweet Manuka honey or beeswax, and barley malt undertones.

Undeniably fruity. It’s a delightful sweet concoction of stewed fruits, apple peels, dessert wine, and honey. An oaky mix is stirred in after a while, creating a smooth fusion of sweet flavours.

Lessons in the Dram

Did you know that no two barrels of whiskies are the same?

Each gives a different flavour, aroma, colour, texture, and other whisky characteristics. Technically, it’s a new product per barrel.

Whisky from a single barrel is called a single-barrel scotch. It’s pure and unadulterated, not blended with whisky from another source. There aren’t many single-barrel scotches available. You might want to try your luck with American whiskeys instead.

Description

If you’ve not tried Kingsbarns, the Dream to Dram is a great one to start with. Distilled in 2015, this flagship Single Malt offers a beautiful, fruity and floral delicacy that is fit for royalty. 90% of this noble spirit is matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks that hailed from Heaven Hill, Kentucky. The remaining 10% is aged in STR (shaved, toasted, re-charred) wine barrels. Let’s give a toast to the Wemyss family, owner of the Kingsbarns Distillery, for this magnificent dram. Cheers!

Tasting Notes

Sight
Pale yellow
Nose
Plenty of new make attributes from the first-fill bourbon casks. Smells like vanilla and crème brûlée. Tropical fruits too! This Kingsbarn is a young chap. It’s full of spirit, so the alcohol smell can be a tad strong. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
Palate
Silky smooth, a thin fruity mouthfeel. Brings forth a creamy sweetness from cereals and the aromatic flavours of roasted coffee.
Finish
Banana bread—what? Yep! Spiced with a touch of ginger. Pairs well with the coffee palate just before.

Auchentoshan 18 Year Old

Type Scotch
Style Single Malt
Region Lowland
Country Scotland
Distillery Auchentoshan
ABV % 43
Aged 18
NOTES:
RM658.00

Lessons in the Dram

Established in 1823, Auchentoshan is one the last active distilleries in the Lowlands. It’s an endangered species in more ways than one, since it is also the only Scottish distillery that employs a true full-time third distillation, nowadays associated with mostly Irish Whiskey. The triple distillation gives this Glasgow malt a refined, delicate touch, which contributes to a very sweet and light Spirit.

Description

Auchentoshan 18 YO is one of their most renowned and characterized Spirits from their core range. It is of course triple distilled and matured in American Bourbon casks for over 18 years, which have imparted some fruit, nut and barley flavors. This right here is definitely an Auchentoshan for all of you who know and love the brand. It is filled with history, tradition and artisanship — and everything else we love about this Lowlands favorite. You’ll notice a significant upgrade in terms of character and delicacy in comparison to the Classic and 12 YO expressions. For a distillery that prides itself in making the smoothest Whisky possible — this is as smooth as they come.
