Auld Goonsys's Malt Whisky Series

Whisky with a Story. Auld Goonsy is an old timer in the whisky industry and has a wealth of knowledge and experience having worked in the cooperage of bonded warehouses and also in distilleries throughout Scotland.

He has called on many of his old friends, ex-distillery managers and whisky enthusiasts to reminisce about their times working with all things whisky. With his pals of old codgers, they have collectively selected special casks of whisky that they think is perfect to put in a bottle.

The main theme of the range is Single Cask bottlings where the panel of ‘auld yins’ select the cask and then have it bottled. Most casks will be bottled at Cask Strength, others will be bottled at a strength that the panel feel is just right for that dram.

Lessons In The Dram

Following Diageo and United Distillers’ acquisition of Scottish Malt Distillers, the first official single malt bottling, a 12 year old, under the 'Flora & Fauna’ range was released from the site.

In 1997, the distillery launched the infamous ‘Loch Dhu’ bottling, which was met with a mixed reaction due to heavy artificially colouring, but has managed to garner a cult following.

Description

Distilled in January 2009 at Speyside's Mannochmore Distillery, this single malt was matured for 12 years, with a finishing period in an Oloroso sherry cask. In June 2021, a total of 203 bottles were drawn from this single cask by the independent bottler, Auld Goonsy's Malt.

Country Scotland

Lessons In The Dram

The Teaninich distillery is north of Inverness and most of the output is used as a 'filler' for Diageo blends. Therefore, single malt Teaninich bottlings are rare.

Description

This 13 year old single malt was distilled at Teaninich back in June 2008. The whisky was matured in a single cask for 13 years, before the fab gang at Old Goonsy's Malt decided it was time to crack it open and bottle it up in June 2021! A total of 549 bottles were drawn from the cask and the whisky bottled without any added colour or chill-filtration.

Lessons In The Dram

There has been only one official bottling of the Benrinnes distillery. The official bottling is more or less the 15 year old Flora and Fauna edition.

There is a substantial number of independent bottling of the Benrinnes distillery. Most of them are rather light and floral with a few spicy and hot exceptions.

The majority of the Whisky distilled at Benrinnes goes to the Blend industry. They are being used in Johnnie Walker and J&B Blended Whiskys.

Description

Beautiful Benrinnes single malt, distilled in July 2008, after which it spent 12 years maturing in a single American oak hogshead until the folks at Auld Goonsy's Malt decided it was ready for bottling! The cask was opened in June 2021, with a total outturn of 272 bottles at a cask strength of 55.6% ABV.
