Casks Exploration: Sherry Scotch Whisky

The cask that a whisky is matured in contributes up to 80% of the character of a whisky. In this event, we invite you to a virtual blind tasting session brought to you by a collaboration between EO Malaysia and The Whisky Notes.

Discover the romantic tale of marriage between sherry wine from Andalusia, Spain and Scottish whisky with a serving of flavours, heritage and history from 3 distilleries that have been at it for almost 200 years.

Lessons In The Dram

The "Big 3" Single Malts are #1 Glenlivet, #2 The Macallan, and #3 Glenfiddich. Together, they produce over 20 million bottles of Whisky per year — the vast majority of which is used in their respective Single Malt offerings.

Description

Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the "Big 3" Single Malts in Scotland. Fortunately, they have achieved this scale without sacrificing quality. Their achievements are numerous — including setting the record price ever paid at auction for a single bottle of Scotch. They produce a very broad range of world-class Single Malt Whiskies that have a huge global following.

Released as part of Macallan’s ever-wonderful Sherry Oak range comes this 12-Year-Old. It has spent its entire maturation in sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez and is bottled at 40% ABV after its 12 years of ageing. It’s full of all those hallmark dried fruit and marmalade notes we’ve come to know and love from a sherried Macallan.

Lessons In The Dram

The maker of this Spirit is one of the few remaining independent and family-owned distilleries in Scotland. It was started in 1836 by Robert Hay, and bought by John Grant a few decades later. Nowadays it's run by the 6th generation of the Grant family, making it truly independent, which is kind-of refreshing these days.

Description

Rich and sherried 15yo malt from one of the best distilleries in Speyside. Aged for a little bit longer and bottled a little stronger for a more concentrated, richer flavour. As always, Glenfarclas remains one of the best-value malts on the market – a must for lovers of sherried whisky.

Glenfarclas distillery owns six stills, which are the largest in all of Highland, and produce a typical Speyside-style Whisky, which is heavily Sherry influenced. They mature their malts in traditional dunnage warehouses, where they have stock back to 1952.

Lessons In The Dram

The Glendronach Distillery was founded in 1826 and stands as one of the first licensed distilleries in Scotland. It is located in a secluded spot in Aberdeenshire, dedicated to producing richly Sherried Scotch style with their 4 copper pot stills. In 2002 it was mothballed until 2008 when it was sold to BenRiach.

Description

The Revival has been revived! The GlenDronach's 15 Year Old Revival was a much-loved expression, though was sadly discontinued in 2015 by the distillery, citing lack of maturing stocks. However, stocks have been replenished and The GlenDronach 15 Year Old Revival has returned to our shelves!

The Glendronach 15 Year old Revival celebrates the revitalization of Glendronach, after it was bought by The BenRiach Distillery in 2008 and subsequently acquired by Brown-Forman Corporation. It's back with a new recipe thanks to master blender Dr. Rachel Barrie, combining both oloroso and PX casks into a rich sherry-monster that's packed with spice and fruit.
